Loch near Glencoe forest hike in Glencoe loch at dusk
Candi and I have just left Glencoe, on the West Coast of Scotland, just north of Oban. It's a very small town, nestled between a Long Loch and the mountains, and very beautiful. We were only here one night, which is a shame becuase it's so nice here. We have reservations at a hostal in Buttermere, in the Lakes District tonight and tomorrow which we have already paid for, so were stuck. There is some religous convention going on in Keswick, so everything is booked for the week (Ack!). We picked up our rental car in Edinburgh yesterday morning, and after the initial shock of driving on the wrong side of the road and trying to find our way out of the city, the drive was beautiful, passing through farmlands of rolling green hills and thickly forested mountains. We decided to forgoe going to Loch Ness, as it's so far out of the way and everyone we talked to said it is kind of a let down. It was just as well because we had a fairly long drive to get to Glencoe, arriving in the afternoon with enough time for a hike thruogh the forest and up a mountainside for some spectacular views (see pictures). It was nice to get out and walk after being in the car all day. We stayed in a single wide trailer, which was actually pretty nice and reasonably priced. It had 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom and living room with satellite T.V. Since we had a kitchen, Candi decided to cook dinner and we ate outside, drinking a bottle of Italian wine I had brought from Tuscany. It was a gorgeous night, and nice to have a home cooked meal after a month of eating in restaurants. This morning we got up early headed south, passing through some more spectacular scenery. We have a long drive ahead of us to the Lakes District in England, where we will be for 2 nights.
