| This is our 2nd day in the Lakes District of England, which is incredibly beautiful. Were staying in a small town called Buttermere, about 8 miles south of Keswick, in a youth hostal. It's pretty spartan, but the only place we could find, as everything is booked because of an annual religuous convention. Buttermere is pretty small, only a few restuarants, Inns and lot's of sheep. Today we drove to keswick, which is one of the largest towns in the Lakes District, a cool little town, but very crowded and touristy. We had intended to stay here if we could have gotten a room, but am glad now that we are in Buttermere. The drive from Buttermere to Keswick is on a narrow, twisting, mostly one lane road through the mountains, over a steep pass, where you have to keep an eye out for sheep, which are everywhere, including the middle of the road. We have altered our itinerary a bit, as we are both in need for a little relaxation, so have decided to skip York, and spend more time in both the Cotswalds and Bath, before heading to London. Candi will actually go to Wales to meet some climbing friends for a few days, joining me in Bath the last day. On the way down to the Cotswalds we are going to spend a night near Leicester, with my friend Claire, an English gal I know from Costa Rica. It's too bad we won't see York and Cambridge, but we are tired of dashing from one location to another. I can always come back another time after all.
After spending the morning exploring Keswick, we headed back to Buttermere and went for a nice 4-mile hike around Lake Buttermere, stopping for a swim and picnic lunch of 'pasties' which we bought in Keswick (pasties are delicious meat and potato turnovers or pies - mmm-mm). |
