painted half-timber houses in Colmar more half-timbered cuteness heading up to the cathedral
Bonjour from Colmar! I arrived early yesterday afternoon and have just been hanging out around my hotel relaxing, doing laundry and catching up on email. After spending the last 3 weeks checking out tourist sites, I am not really into being a tourist at the moment. I am staying at a great little hotel right off the main pedestrian street. Its a funky little ramshackle place covered with grape vines and flowers. Its a typical half-timber style house common in this area and the owners also make wine. Colmar is in an area called the Alsace, which has been tossed back and forth between France and Germany for centuries. Its a unique mixture of both cultures and one of the few places in the world where you can order sauerkraut and crepes on the same menu. This area is famous for its white wine.

Today it has been raining, which is rare here, so I took the opportunity to have my photos transfered to CD and have posted some as you will see. In the afternoon I went on a mini-bus tour of the surrounding area, visiting the castle of Koenigsbourg and a cute little town on the route du vin (wine road) called Riquewihr (voted one of Frances cutest villages). We did a wine tasting in one of the small wineries and got a little buzzed sampling zome of the local wines. It was a nice tour and only 4 of us; a woman from Paris and a young couple from Seattle of all places.
