the ship
I'm on an overnight cruise ship between Stockholm and Tallin, Estonia. I've never been on a regular cruise ship, so I don't know how this compares, but it's pretty interesting to say the least. It would be much more fun if I wasn't alone, but it's entertaining just sitting back and observing it all (especially after finishing a large glass of hard cider). There's an interesting mix of people; mostly Swedes and Estonians, families, senior citizens and a group of Japanese tourists. It's the end of summer and a Sunday night, so the ship is less than half-full, which is nice.

It's a big, ship, 9 decks high including the car deck, and it has a casino, several restaurants and bars, a disco and a nightclub, complete with cheesy lounge singers. There is boy band performing now, all trying to look like Justin Timberlake, singing rap in Estonian, which is pretty funny. I walked to the other end of the ship, to the "Aluminum Disco" which is playing "Disco Inferno" by the Trammps (I love that song)... It's pretty dead, but there is a group of senior citizens shaking their booties on the dance floor, not something you see everyday. I mean, I would expect these cute little Swedish grandma's to be dancing to folk music or maybe the polka, but not Disco Inferno. But, good for them.

I splurged and got a cabin all to myself, which cost about $105 U.S. with my Eurail pass discount. I could have spent half that much if I got a shared cabin. but I'm glad I didn't, especially glad after seeing the 2 drunk Russian guys stumbling through the duty free shop; loud and obnoxious, their cart overflowing with bottles of tax-free booze. Just think, I could be sharing my tiny, shoehorn cabin with these 2 characters. No thanks. I'd say it was well worth spending that extra $56.

Now 2 mothers with babies have joined the seniors on the dance floor, dancing with their babies in their arms... huh? Isn't this a bar? well, we are at sea... One of babies is laughing and really enjoying himself, the other is just staring, transfixed by the lights and rotating disco ball. I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it.
